What is the difference between Region and Location in CUCM?

--> Regions specifies the type of compression or bit rate can be used for voice and video calls between IP Phones.

--> It can be 8 kbps or G.729, 64 kbps or G.722/G.711, and so forth that is used on the link.

--> Locations specifies the amount of bandwidth can be used for voice and video calls between IP Phones.

--> Locations work in conjunction with regions to specify the characteristics of a network link.

--> Location can also be used to perform call admission control(CAC) which enables you to control audio and video availability by limiting the amount of bandwidth that is available for audio and video calls over links between the locations.

--> For example, If the customer is having 2 buildings, HQ and Branch Office with the leased line 512 kbps for Data+Voice.

--> With this slow link our customer decides to use the G.722 codec (Region Configuration) and specify the bandwidth by using location configuration.

--> It is recommended to configure each IP Phone in the system to both a region and a location.

--> We can configure locations in CUCM on basis of,

i) Physical locations

ii)The amount of bandwidth that is required for voice and Video calls.

--> WEcan configure regions in CUCM on basis of,

i)  codecs used for intra-region calls

ii) codecs used for inter-region calls
